Burials
with Nature
Green funerals
focus on preserving the environment, local wildlife and any archeological
interests at the funeral site. In addition, coffins can be made of easily
biodegradable materials such as recycled wood, bamboo, wicker or cardboard,
or an alternative shroud may replace the coffin altogether. The difference
between a woodland and a nature reserve burial site is very simple.
At a woodland site relatives may plant a tree as a memorial to their
loved ones, though headstones and other memorial plaques are almost
always prohibited. At a nature reserve burial site small wooden biodegradable
plaques may be used to mark the grave and flowers befitting the local
environment planted on the grave.
At present
there are more than 150 woodland or nature reserve burial sites either
active or seeking planning permission in the UK, including the Friends
of Nature Burial Ground in Mobberley (just outside of
Knutsford), winner of the 2004 Award for Best Natural Burial
Ground in the North West, as awarded by The Natural Death Handbook -
